Northern Field Day

Northern Field Day Ballyhaise College and Justin Good, Derryhoo, Co. Cavan This event will accrue 30 CPD points Participants are advised to bring suitable clothing and footwear

Description

Morning Session:  Our visit will begin with a short introduction to Ballyhaise College and the forestry courses it offers.  The 50ha of diverse woodlands on the college’s 220ha estate facilitates practical training modules for the students during their Level 5 & Level 6 Forestry courses.  Many of these students subsequently progress to Level 7 & Level 8 courses at Waterford Institute of Technology.  This year Ballyhaise College celebrates the 30th anniversary of its forestry courses.  During the morning we will visit the college’s new forest harvester simulator (the only one of its kind in this country), adjacent agro-forestry stands and the college’s phenological plots.

Afternoon Session: After lunch we will depart Ballyhaise College and travel to visit privately owned woodlands near Milltown, Co. Cavan.   Owned and managed by Justin Good, a professional forester who received his early forestry training at Ballyhaise College, these diverse broadleaf woodlands will offer a wide range of topics for discussion.  Managed primarily on a commercial basis, these woodlands showcase several innovative revenue streams including organic pig production and apiculture.  In 2014, Justin Good won the national award in the RDS-Forest Service Irish Forestry and Woodland Awards for excellence in managing his forests
