Northern Western Field Day

North Western Field Day Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo Meeting Point: Murphy’s Hotel, Teeling St., Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo. This day is worth 30 CPD points

Description

Morning: Two year old privately owned forest at Tullycusheen, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo, established and managed by Western Forestry Co-op

Our first stop is at a two year old 8ha forest at Tullycusheen, Tubbercurry where Victor Barber (Western Forestry Co-op) will present an overview of forestry in Co. Sligo and detail the main challenges that foresters face on a daily basis in order to establish forests in the county. These challenges vary from biodiversity thresholds and constraints due to archaeological discoveries during site operations, local objections to forest establishment and access issues and constraints imposed by local authorities. During this site visit there will be an overall discussion on the best means of addressing these challenges in order to maintain/increase our current afforestation programme.

Leader: Victor Barber (Western Forestry Co-op)

Afternoon: Coillte site at Sessuegilroy, Masshill, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo

In the afternoon, we will visit a nearby reforestation site which is managed by Coillte. Topics for discussion at this site include the overall feasibility and silvicultural objectives of the forest while conforming with Best Forestry Practice, in particular the Water Framework Directive. The discussion will focus on the environmental constraints of fertilising on peat sites and the actual success of various application methods. It is proposed to fertilise (aerial and manual) a section of this property. Discussion will focus on best practice and the inputs from statutory bodies such as the regional fishery boards and NPWS in approving and regulating these operations. The afternoon session will be relevant to all forest owners who manage nutrient deficient sites which have gone into check.

Leaders: Seppi Hona (Forest Service), Padraic Treacy & Joe Finn (Coillte)
