Southern Field Day

The Field Day will focus on Spanish Chestnut, Oak, Cherry and Oak/Cherry mixtures This event will accrue 30 CPD points

Description

This field day will begin with a visit to a small stand of Spanish chestnut (Castanea sativa) which was planted in 1954. This stand, which is owned by Coillte, contains a number of ‘Plus’ trees and admirably demonstrates the potential of this species in Ireland, both in terms of its timber quality and yield. The topics for discussion here will include an update on the chestnut breeding programme in Ireland and Britain.

Afterwards we will visit some privately owned stands of oak (Quercus robur) and cherry (Prunus avium) and some oak/cherry mixtures, all of which were planted in 1995. Here the discussion will focus on management prescriptions for these broadleaved crops, with particular reference to thinning, pruning, selection and treatment of potential final crop trees.

The assistance of Laura and Peter Fletcher, Ted Horgan and Ricky Byrne (Coillte) in organising and hosting this field day is gratefully acknowledged.
