The Irish Forestry Unit Trust’s Clonad woodlands include this woodland block of 351 acres with a wide diversity of tree species, stand ages and woodland types and recently won the 2019 RDS-FS Forestry Award for Production Forestry.

Clonad woodland was one of the first private forests in Ireland to achieve certification and Stacey Bradley and Oisin Meagher of IForUT and Donal Whelan, forest manager, will outline ongoing management, future management planning and related forest operations and the various measures and checklists required to comply with forest certification. Certification compliance and management practices will be outlined to participants including how they assist Clonad protect its woodland ecology, local environment, water quality and various wildlife habitats.

During this woodland walk we will view the main sections of Clonad woodlands, discussing their management for sustainable timber production and also the measures taken to protect and enhance their biodiversity and other environmental features and to encourage and foster associated flora and fauna. The woodlands also provide social benefits through employing mainly local contractors and facilitate forest research and knowledge transfer.

Many of the broadleaved sites within Clonad are managed on Continuous Cover Forestry basis to add to the diversity of the woodlands and this will also be outlined during the walks.

After lunch we will look at mature mixed woodlands in Clonad and discuss their management and also certification checklists for a range of forestry operations. We will also discuss environmental, wildlife and biodiversity considerations including the local deer population and other management issues.
